South Carolina QB great Connor Shaw leaving job with Gamecocks
Legendary South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is stepping down from his post within the Gamecocks football program, a university spokesperson confirmed to The State on Wednesday morning.
Gamecock Central’s Mike Uva first reported the news.
Shaw — who ranks as the winningest quarterback in school history — had been serving as the director of football relations for head coach Shane Beamer after initially joining Will Muschamp’s staff as the director of player development.
“Transitioning into a career best for me and my (family),” Shaw told The State in a message. “Of course will stay involved and support the program!”
Prior to his time on the USC staff, Shaw briefly worked as a tight ends coach at Furman before stepping down to pursue other business opportunities.
The Georgia native starred under former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier. Shaw finished his four-year career in Columbia having completed 480 of 733 passes (65.5%) for 6,074 yards and 56 touchdowns, while adding another 1,683 yards and 17 scores rushing.
He boasted a career record of 27-5 record, including a 17-0 mark at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Shaw spent three years in the NFL after his college career, spending two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and one campaign with the Chicago Bears. His lone NFL start came with the Browns. He connected on 14 of 28 passes for 177 yards against the Baltimore Ravens.
Shaw signed a contract extension with South Carolina that ran from June 1, 2020 until May 30, 2021. He was set to make a $200,000 base salary under the terms of that deal, though it’s not immediately clear what his contract situation entailed once that deal expired.
