Shane Beamer is making frequent stops at USC sports, and he’s enjoying every moment
Shane Beamer has been making his rounds at South Carolina athletic events.
The Gamecocks’ head football coach spent Sunday afternoon at Colonial Life Arena watching the 13th-straight SEC win for Dawn Staley’s No. 1 Gamecocks over then-No. 12 Tennessee in front of a sellout crowd.
Beamer attended a USC men’s basketball game in January to catch Frank Martin’s squad, and he showed up at a Gamecocks hockey matchup with his son earlier in February.
Monday, Beamer opened his press conference by congratulating a successful weekend in Gamecocks athletics — women’s basketball, softball, baseball, women’s tennis, swimming and diving, men’s basketball and men’s tennis.
“Awesome weekend for Carolina athletics,” Beamer said. “(I’m) glad to be back in town here for a while and not have to be traveling for recruiting. Really looking forward to getting out and watching more and more of these teams as we get into the springtime as well.”
Beamer has clearly enjoyed himself at his USC athletics stops, bringing his children to the stands and connecting with fans at the games.
At Sunday’s women’s basketball game, Beamer connected with former Gamecocks football players Stephon Gilmore, Jaycee Horn and Deebo Samuel. Beamer also said he was proud to see SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on hand Sunday to watch USC and Tennessee.
“Congrats to Coach Staley and her team, what an awesome environment and an example for so many to see about what this place is about,” Beamer said. “The fan support we have here, that was awesome to be a part of.”
Beamer led the 18,000 fans at Colonial Life Arena in the “Gamecocks” chant leading up to “Sandstorm” ahead of tip-off at Sunday’s women’s basketball game. While he noted being a hype man may not be in his immediate future, Beamer said he enjoyed the experience.
“That was a neat experience for me,” Beamer said. “Really awesome and humbled to be able to go out there and be a part of that atmosphere yesterday, and what an awesome win.”
Spring football practice starts March 15 with the annual Garnet and Black spring game to be hosted at night in Williams-Brice Stadium. The scrimmage will be on April 16 at 7 p.m. and is set for an SEC Network Plus stream.
Beamer teased that there will be plenty of high school recruits attending this year’s USC spring game, and he is calling for the highest attendance ever for the evening showcase.
“I know there’s so much excitement — and will continue to be — about the environment and the atmosphere,” Bemaer said. “We need to make that the most attended spring football game, Garnet and Black game, in South Carolina football history because it’s going to be an awesome night for sure.”
