USC Gamecocks Football

Here’s an early bowl game projection for South Carolina football’s upcoming season

South Carolina football still has three months before it takes the field in 2022, but one analyst has already made a bowl projection.

247Sports national analyst Brad Crawford projected the Gamecocks will play in the TaxSlayer Bowl against Pittsburgh out of the ACC in his summer bowl projections released this week for the 2022 football season.

Game times for this season’s bowls were released last week. Should USC go to the TaxSlayer Bowl, the Gamecocks would play Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN. The game is held in Jacksonville, Florida.

In Shane Beamer’s second year in Columbia, the Gamecocks will see the on-field debut of former Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler, as well as fellow former Sooner Austin Stogner and transfer portal additions that include former Wake Forest running back Christian Beal-Smith and standout James Madison receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells.

South Carolina outperformed preseason expectations in 2021. The Gamecocks were projected by many before the 2021 season to win three or four game, but they finished the year 7-6 with a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina.

Last month, USC installed new LED lights with the capability to flash garnet at the Gamecocks’ home Williams-Brice Stadium as part of its offseason renovations. The project also includes a $2.4 million elevator addition on the 200 level and a $2.3 million west main concourse expansion.

The Gamecocks’ first matchup will be held under the new lights. South Carolina will host former interim head coach and co-offensive coordinator Shawn Elliott’s Georgia State on Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on SEC Network Plus.
