QB changes and other observations from updated Gamecocks football roster for 2022

South Carolina has released an updated football roster ahead of the 2022 season.

The Gamecocks are expected to begin preseason camp the first week of August for the second season under head coach Shane Beamer. The first game is Sept. 3 at Williams-Brice Stadium against Georgia State.

Here are news, notes and observations about the new roster.

QB changes

Quarterbacks listed on the roster are Spencer Rattler, Luke Doty, Colten Gauthier, Braden Davis, Tanner Bailey and Jake Helfrich.

Bailey joined the roster this summer and will wear No. 15. He’s listed at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, and his first USC bio reads: “Highly-regarded quarterback prospect who joined the team in the summer… possesses super arm talent… can run well enough to protect himself to extend the play, but more of a true pocket passer… has a high football IQ and mental makeup.”

Jalen Daniels, a walk-on and recent USC commitment, is not yet listed on the roster.

Walk-on QB Hayden Lee is no longer on the team, at least according to the updated online roster. Lee, who signed with North Greenville University in 2020, was a Dorman High alum and had joined the Gamecocks in January as a preferred walk-on.

Two others back on the roster

Two players who had extended absences from the team for undisclosed reasons, wide receiver Jalen Brooks and defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce, are back on the roster.

Signed as athletes, and ...

Irmo’s Nick Emmanwori, signed as an athlete, is listed on the roster as a defensive back.

Chapin’s Zavier Short, also signed as an athlete, is listed as a tight end.

DQ Smith added to roster

Spring Valley High School standout DQ Smith is listed on the Gamecocks’ updated roster and is expected to start his Gamecock career as a safety. It’s the first time the Gamecocks have publicly acknowledged his addition to the team.

Smith was a verbal commitment to South Carolina but didn’t actually sign in either of the two signing periods. He was expected to “blueshirt,” a route that would allow USC to put him on scholarship in August.

Smith played quarterback in high school.
