Cam Smith among multiple USC defensive starters out for today’s game against Georgia
The South Carolina football will be team will be without multiple defensive starters against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday (noon, ESPN).
“We got five starters out on defense today,” head coach Shane Beamer said in an interview on College GameDay. “So we are going to have guys step up.”
Most notably, the Gamecocks will be without top defensive back Cam Smith, South Carolina confirmed with its pregame availability report. Smith was ruled out for the contest after suffering an injury in last week’s loss at Arkansas. ESPN NFL Draft analyst Jordan Reid reported Smith suffered a concussion against the Razorbacks.
Defensive lineman Alex Huntley will miss the UGA game for the Gamecocks. Huntley injured his leg early in last week’s loss to the Hogs but returned to the game with a knee brace.
Defensive back RJ Roderick (arm) will miss his second straight game.
The Gamecocks already knew they’d be limited defensively after edge defender Jordan Strachan and linebacker Mo Kaba both suffered season-ending injuries at Arkansas. Gilber Edmond and Sherrod Greene are expected to start with Strachan and Kaba out.
Defensive linemen MJ Webb and Tonka Hemingway were announced as starters. Marcellas Dial, Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith were all announced as starters in the secondary.
Also out for today’s game: wide receiver Corey Rucker (foot) and DB David Spaulding (leg).
