Yes, there is a Bonham Trophy in South Carolina. Here’s how you can see it

The Bonham Trophy is in South Carolina — at least a version of it.

Before Shane Beamer’s weekly press conference Tuesday, the award was brought in and displayed for reporters inside the interview room of the Gamecocks’ operations building.

The trophy is given to the winner of the Texas A&M-South Carolina matchup. This is the first time the Gamecocks have had it in the building.

“Proud of what it stands for, and proud to have it,” Beamer said.

The Bonham Trophy is named after James Butler Bonham, who graduated from the University of South Carolina and fought in the Battle of the Alamo.

The trophy that was shown at the USC press conference was just a replica, however. The original version resides in the Alamo in Texas.

The one in South Carolina will be on display in the Columbia area for two weeks at a to-be-determined location, Saluda County Historical Society spokesman Richard Burton Peterson told The State. After that, the replica is on display at the Saluda County Historical Museum, or about an hour west of Columbia and the USC campus. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

South Carolina defeated Texas A&M last week for the first time in the series history, as the two teams became permanent cross-divisional opponents in 2014.

USC has won four straight games in 2022 and will play its homecoming game on Saturday against Missouri, when it will compete for another trophy.

The South Carolina-Missouri game is dubbed the “Mayor’s Cup,” and the mayor of the winning team — in Columbia, South Carolina or Columbia, Missouri — awards that trophy.
