South Carolina lands dynamic AAC receiver from transfer portal
South Carolina has another piece for its increasingly deep receiver room.
Memphis pass-catcher Eddie Lewis is enrolled at South Carolina and is expected to join the Gamecocks football program, a university spokesperson confirmed to The State.
Tony Morrell of The Big Spur first reported the news Lewis had enrolled at USC on Monday.
“(Receivers coach Justin Stepp) told me he loves the way I play,” Lewis said earlier this month. “The offensive coordinator (Dowell Loggains) said they love the way I play and how aggressive I am. They really think I can be a game changer and play in the state I’m from.’
Lewis, who started his career at Butler Community College (Kansas), was a second team All-American Athletic Conference returner in 2022, while also leading Memphis in receiving this past fall. The New York native finished the 2022 season with 615 yards and seven touchdowns on 42 catches — including a 94-yard, two touchdown game against eventual Cotton Bowl champion Tulane.
With Josh Vann graduated, South Carolina was in need of a possible punt returner. The Gamecocks also lost four of their top five leading receivers from last year’s team.
Shane Beamer’s squad should now be fairly deep at receiver come 2023 with Antwane “Juice” Wells Jr. returning alongside veterans Xavier Legette, Ahmarean Brown and Dakereon Joyner. South Carolina should also be dynamic at tight end with receiving options in Arkansas transfer Trey Knox, Florida import Nick Elksnis and ex-Western Kentucky star Joshua Simon.
The Gamecocks also are in the running for Elijah Caldwell out of Northwestern High School in Rock Hill.
