Gamecocks get good news on Jordan Strachan’s extra eligibility request
South Carolina has at least one issue resolved at defensive end.
Jordan Strachan has officially been granted a seventh year of eligibility by the NCAA, head coach Shane Beamer told reporters on Tuesday afternoon. Strachan had petitioned for an extra year of eligibility after suffering a torn ACL in Week 2 at Arkansas last fall.
“Strachan is official. He is good to go,” Beamer said. “Excited for him and thankful that the powers that be decided that.”
Strachan is now in his third year with the South Carolina program after beginning his career at Georgia State under ex-Gamecocks assistant Sean Elliott. The Kingsland, Georgia native tied for the national lead in sacks during the 2020 regular season with the Panthers.
South Carolina is thin at defensive end heading into the 2023 season following the transfers of Jordan Burch (Oregon) and Gilber Edmond (Florida State). The Gamecocks are also expected to be without four-star signee Monteque Rhames, who was arrested last month in relation to felony weapons charges.
Beamer also said South Carolina is awaiting “final, final word” on the eligibility status of running back Dante Miller. The former Ivy League rusher tranferred to USC from Columbia last year and played a mostly reserve role in the Gamecocks backfield.
That said, USC is thin at tailback entering the summer with only Juju McDowell and Newberry transfer Mario Anderson Jr. on scholarship at the position. Receiver Dakereon Joyner has taken reps at running back this spring and the Gamecocks will get four-star signee Dontavious Braswell enrolled over the summer.
