Gamecock great DJ Swearinger signs with XFL team
DJ Swearinger is getting another shot on the gridiron.
The former South Carolina football standout signed with the XFL’s DC Defenders, the team announced Wednesday.
“Welcome back to the District @JungleBoi_Swagg. Let’s get to work,” the team posted on its Twitter page.
The XFL, which is owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is an eight-team league that restarted play in February after a three year hiatus.
Swearinger wasn’t on an NFL roster last year and his last action came as a member of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad in 2021.
Swearinger was an emotional and statistical leader during his time with the Gamecocks from 2009-12. He made 33 starts and had six interceptions
The Houston Texans picked Swearinger in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played for five different NFL teams, including Washington, in his nine seasons.
His last full season was with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. Swearinger has appeared in 110 games during his pro career and has 396 tackles and 14 interceptions.
He will be the second former Gamecock in the XFL. Defensive end Kobe Smith plays with the San Antonio Brahmas.
