South Carolina’s most recent hire has ties far beyond football.

USC has hired former Chicago Cubs staffer Yimy Queipo Rodriguez as the new director of football performance, a university spokesperson confirmed to The State on Wednesday.

Wes Mitchell of Gamecock Central first reported the news.

Rodriguez most recently served as the coordinator and performance dietitian for the Chicago Cubs for the last year, per his Linkedin. Prior to that, he worked in varying roles at the University of Rochester.

A Cuba native, Rodriguez was taken in the 27th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played in 32 games over two years in the Dodgers’ farm system before moving into the nutrition space.

Rodriguez replaces Kristin Coggin, who left the program earlier this offseason to join Matt Rhule’s staff at Nebraska. Coggin was one of three staffers — along with offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield and offensive analyst Christian Ellsworth to leave South Carolina for Nebraska during the most recent hiring cycle.
