What does South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler think of Dowell Loggains? So far, so good

The Spencer Rattler-Dowell Loggains experience is still a little over 100 days from its first game — but consider Rattler excited.

The Gamecocks’ starting quarterback spoke about his new offensive coordinator while putting on the first Spencer Rattler football camp, held Saturday at Dreher High School in Columbia.

“Dowell just kind of lets us do our thing,” Rattler told The State. “That’s what I like. He says I’m the point guard and have just got to lead the team. I’m trying my best to do that on the field.”

Rattler enters the year with high expectations after closing the 2022 regular season guiding the Gamecocks to upset wins over No. 5 Tennessee and No. 8 Clemson.

The former five-star passer compiled 438 yards and six touchdowns on 30 of 37 passing in the win over Tennessee, giving South Carolina its first win over a top five opponent since 2019. Rattler was named Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and the co-SEC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the Volunteers.

“November on, I felt like we couldn’t be beat,” Rattler said. “Obviously we lost the bowl game. Had a lot of guys out. But November on, we started to click and it’s just been great momentum from there on out.”

Loggains comes to South Carolina after a two-year spell as the tight ends coach at Arkansas, his alma mater. However, he previously spent almost two decades in the NFL, including stints as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and New York Jets.

Shane Beamer hired Loggains in December to replace embattled offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, who departed the program for the same role under Matt Rhule at Nebraska.

“Spencer knows when he feels comfortable,” Loggains told The State earlier this year. “So he can be a second voice for Coach (Luke) Day, Coach Beamer. He can hold people accountable, because he holds himself accountable. And that’s what we expect. Everyone expects and everyone says that about their quarterback and very few do it. And to this point, right now, in our offseason program, he’s done that stuff. “
