The latest on South Carolina’s Antwane Wells, Ahmarean Brown

Starting receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells will be out this week against Mississippi State, Shane Beamer announced Tuesday.

Wells saw a specialist in Charlotte on Tuesday morning, Beamer said, after he leaving Saturday’s 24-14 loss to Georgia with a left foot injury. Beamer described it as a good visit and described Wells’ injury as “nothing season-ending.” The decision was made to rest Wells this week. The team will re-evaluate his situation next week ahead of the Tennessee game in Knoxville and the bye week after that.

From the preseason, Beamer described Wells’ situation as a “lower-body injury.” On Saturday, however, he told CBS on the broadcast that Wells was “done right now, maybe a broken bone in foot. Good news it is the one he had surgery on. He got a screw in it.”

Wells returned to the sideline a few minutes later, hopping on his right foot and stopping to visit with family members before taking a seat in the bench area. He was seen with ice on the left foot.

“He won’t be able to play this Saturday,” Beamer said. “I’m disappointed for him because I know how hard he worked.”

Other injury news

Beamer described Ahmarean Brown (hamstring), Jatius Geer and Tyreek Johnson as “questionable but trending in the right direction.”

Brown, also a starting receiver, did not practice Tuesday but was “doing some stuff on the side. He’s not far off,” Beamer said. He didn’t make the trip to Georgia on Saturday after sustaining the injury a week earlier against Furman.

Geer (undisclosed) worked in practice Tuesday, so Beamer said he’s “optimistic” he’ll play against Mississippi State. Johnson (undisclosed) practiced some Sunday and Tuesday, Beamer said.
