How Tennessee trolled South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler’s ‘Super Bowl’ comment
South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler quipped after Saturday’s loss to Tennessee that the game was the Volunteers’ “Super Bowl.”
On Sunday, Tennessee fired back with a troll of its own.
“All the highlights from last night’s Super Bowl,” the team’s account on X (formerly Twitter) posted, attaching a 5-minute video of plays from Tennessee’s 41-20 home win over USC.
“Super Bowl” was written in a smaller text generally used to indicate sarcasm (“ₛᵤₚₑᵣ bₒwₗ”), and the account also added a tongue-out emoji to the post, made in reaction to Rattler’s postgame comments.
Rattler had his best game of the year in 2022 as South Carolina upset then-No. 5 Tennessee, 63-38, to eliminate the Vols from College Football Playoff contention. Rattler, the Oklahoma transfer, was 30-37 for 438 yards and six touchdowns as USC racked up 606 yards of total offense at Williams-Brice Stadium.
No. 22 Tennessee on Saturday limited Rattler to a season-low 169 yards passing yards, intercepted him once and sacked him six times in a 21-point win at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. Rattler also finished with his worst single-game quarterback rating in five games (33.6) as South Carolina fell to 2-3.
The Gamecocks are also 1-2 in the SEC after the loss, which places them sixth out of seven teams in the SEC Eastern Division standings, only ahead of Vanderbilt (0-2).
“It was like their Super Bowl tonight,” Rattler said. “Congrats to them.”
Rattler postgame also acknowledged vulgar chants from the Tennessee student section, who chanted “F--- you, Spencer” throughout the game, so loudly it could be heard on the SEC Network’s TV broadcast.
“It was a great environment, but I must be doing something right if they keep saying that the whole night,” Rattler said. “Like I say, if you ain’t got haters, you ain’t poppin.’”
Fans of Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) got a kick out of the team account firing back at Rattler’s comments. Here’s a sampling of reactions on the post on X:
- “So petty. I love you.”
- “Give the social media coordinator a raise.”
- “iconic for the caption”
Tennessee’s team account kept things going later Sunday with another post captioned “we’re going to disney worlddd!!!!!!”
Context: Since 1987, Disney has been playing a commercial directly following that year’s Super Bowl in which one of the winning teams’ players says they’re going to Disney World (or Disneyland).
That clip get works into the commercial and aired minutes after the Super Bowl’s conclusion. Last season, for example, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes yelled the tagline postgame after his Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII in February.
Fans also appreciated that jab:
- “Gold”
- “Elite trolling.”
- “I love you. Whoever you are that’s running this page.”
