Paul Finebaum rips Shane Beamer for how Gamecocks’ coach broke his foot
Paul Finebaum didn’t seem too amused with Shane Beamer’s story of how he injured his foot.
Beamer, the South Carolina football coach, told reporters Tuesday at his weekly press conference that he broke a bone in his right foot after the Gamecocks’ 41-39 loss to Florida.
Beamer said he kicked something in a “moment of frustration” after USC blew a 10-point fourth quarter lead as the Gamecocks dropped to 2-4 on the season. He shook it off, saying he was “very probable” for Saturday’s game against Missouri.
Finebaum did not appear amused as he spoke about Beamer’s injury on his daily show on the SEC Network.
“This guy was laughing about it, cajoling, thinking it was like a high school frat prank,” Finebaum said. “This is a head football coach at a major SEC school and he breaks his foot in frustration. If he had shown half that effort in trying to stop Florida from blowing them to pieces at the end of that game, I think maybe the season wouldn’t be on the brink of going straight down the toilet. That was really incredible.”
During his SEC teleconference on Wednesday, Beamer was asked if he had heard Finebaum’s comments.
“I did,” Beamer responded. “Don’t have a comment on that.”
It was the second time this week Finebaum publicly mentioned Beamer and the Gamecocks’ 2-4 start. On Sunday, he talked about the Gamecocks on “The Matt Barrie Show.” Barrie is an ESPN host, who used to work in the Columbia area.
“It’s great to love Shane Beamer because he had that eight days last year where he knocked off Tennessee and Clemson,” Finebaum said. “But, what’s that? Four losses?”
“He still has a lot of real estate to deal with this year — Missouri, Texas A&M, Clemson? He’s really on the brink of a terrible year.”
South Carolina went 8-5 last season which included wins over ranked opponents Tennessee and Clemson before losing to Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl.
There was a lot of momentum around the program coming into the season, but a tough schedule, several key injuries, including receiver Antwane Wells, and a struggling defense have slowed the Gameoccks to this point.
The Gamecocks have Missouri this week and then at Texas A&M next week before finishing up with four home games to close the season.
