South Carolina down another running back for spring because of injury
South Carolina’s running back room just got even lighter this spring.
On Tuesday, coach Shane Beamer noted that veteran running back Juju McDowell will be out for the remainder of spring practice.
“He will be done for the spring. It’s nothing long term,” Beamer said.
The senior running back injured his collarbone this spring while diving for a pass in a non-contact drill. He said that the team and McDowell spoke and agreed it would be best for McDowell to undergo surgery now to ensure he’s ready for the fall.
“It’s a collarbone that’s been bothering him a little bit that he fell on diving for a ball to catch a pass and kind of came down on it the wrong way,” Beamer said.
“He’ll have a procedure done to get that mended up. That’s what he wants to do. He’ll be good to go here shortly. He won’t be able to do anything the rest of (spring) practice. He’s played a lot of football around here and we know what he can do.”
McDowell played in 10 games last year with one start, rushing 26 times for 63 yards and two touchdowns. He added 11 catches for 105 yards and another score.
His absence this spring makes South Carolina’s running backs room even lighter.
The Gamecocks are without Arkansas transfer Raheim “Rocket” Sanders, who is recovering from a shoulder surgery he underwent at the end of last season.
In the place of those two absences, South Carolina’s run game is being led by North Texas transfer Oscar Adaway, S.C. State transfer Jawarn Howell and sophomore Djay Braswell.
