Jadeveon Clowney was placed Monday on the NFL’s Active/Physically Unable to Perform list by the Houston Texans.

The Texans’ No. 1 overall 2014 draft pick from South Carolina has been on injured reserve after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee in December.

Being placed on the Active/PUP list before training camp begins allows Clowney to return to practice when he is medically cleared. If he isn’t cleared before the season begins, Clowney would be moved to the Reserve/PUP list and then be unable to play or practice during the first six weeks of the season.

Houston coach Bill O’Brien recently said Clowney could be ready to play in Week 1 of the NFL season.

“I think he’s gonna be there for the opening game (of the regular season) against Kansas City,” O’Brien told NFL.com. “I think he’s going to make it back, and I'm really looking forward to that. He’s working very hard to get back.”

His recovery is “on the right track,” O’Brien said.
