SI’s Andy Staples: Does USC have a package for Lorenzo Nunez?

50 Opinions, Day 37: Between now and the season-opener against North Carolina on Sept. 3, we will ask 50 people: “What do you think about the Gamecocks in 2015?” We’re counting down the days until kickoff. Today’s panelist is Andy Staples, SI.com national college football writer:

“I think the defense has to get better, and it probably will because it probably isn’t going to get much worse than it was last year. I’m interested to see what happens with the quarterback situation. Do they have a package for Lorenzo Nunez? Maybe last year was the case of some young guys on defense, and they are a little bit older and wiser. It’s interesting, because you look at that season and it was very disappointing – but a couple stops in a couple games and you’re looking at a very different season. I just feel like they are not as far off as everybody thinks. It’s a nine-win, 10-win team with just a couple more stops. I think it’s good probably that people aren’t talking about them right now. It’s not a program that is used to dealing with expectations, and it didn’t work out last year. But I don’t think you can sleep on them. They are not that far removed from 33 wins in three years. This is a good time to be laying in the weeds.”
