Shane Beamer addresses LaNorris Sellers’ health heading into USC-Akron game
Days after South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers’ left the LSU game with what coach Shane Beamer called an “ankle sprain,” Beamer updated the health status of his starting quarterback.
During his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Beamer said, “LaNorris assured me he is good and ready to roll.”
Beamer said all injured players did a little bit to a certain degree Tuesday in practice, and he hopes the players can do more as the week goes along.
If Sellers can’t play Saturday, Beamer said Robby Ashford will likely start with Davis Beville behind him. Former QB Luke Doty could also be in the mix.
“The thing with Luke all along, you go focus on receiver and special teams but not getting too far away from quarterback,” Beamer said. “Luke is a smart kid. We have gotten him some reps at quarterback periodically throughout the season already. He doesn’t miss a beat when he goes in there.”
Sellers’ ankle was injured on the second-to-last play of the first half on Saturday, when an LSU pass rusher sacked Sellers and fell awkwardly on his right ankle. Out of halftime, Sellers was working with a trainer on the sideline and eventually went back in the game for one series.
He looked extremely limited in the three post-injury plays. South Carolina then opted to let backup Robby Ashford finish the game.
“We just felt like,” Beamer said after Saturday’s game, “‘You know what, if he’s not going to be able to move like he wants to move, we’ll get him out.’”
This is the second time Sellers has missed snaps with an injury. During the Kentucky contest Sept. 7, Sellers missed a pair of drives in the second quarter with a lower-body injury. He returned to the field late in the second quarter and finished the rest of the game under center.
