South Carolina plays its final 2024 home game on Saturday, and the Gamecocks will be sending a hefty check to its opponent.

Wofford, the FCS squad from Spartanburg, will come to Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend for the sixth time and the first time since 2017. For making the trip and playing the Gamecocks, the Terriers will be rewarded with $600,000.

This will be the third time this year that South Carolina (7-3, 5-3 SEC) has paid a non-conference opponent. Wofford will be receiving the lowest payout, in part, because their travel is easier. The Gamecocks shelled out $1.5 million each to its season-opening opponent Old Dominion and late-September foe Akron.

The Wofford game, oddly enough, is a long time in the making.

The original game contract, signed in 2015, scheduled South Carolina to host Wofford in 2021. That was later changed to 2022 and then to 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, both teams decided to terminate the game contract and, in late 2020, they agreed that Wofford would play at South Carolina in 2024 and 2026.

In the end, it worked out for Wofford. The original contract was only going to pay the Terriers $350,000. The 2026 game will net the Terriers a $1.2 million check from USC.

This will be the regular-season finale for Wofford, which is currently 5-6 after falling to The Citadel last Saturday.

Other notes about the contract:

  • South Carolina has to provide Wofford with 1,500 complimentary tickets.
  • Wofford is allowed to request additional tickets that it can sell at a price determined by USC. If they chose to do that, the Terriers had to return all unsold tickets to USC four weeks before the game — or the value of all unsold tickets would be deducted from the $600,000 compensation.
  • Wofford is allowed 40 sideline passes for coaches, trainers and other workers.
  • Wofford is allowed to bring its cheerleaders and mascot.
  • Officials for the game will be assigned by the SEC.
