A third South Carolina tight end enters transfer portal
On the first day the transfer portal is officially open, another South Carolina tight end announced he is searching for a new home.
Redshirt junior Nick Elksnis took to X on Monday to announce that he has entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. He is the third South Carolina tight end to announce their plans to transfer, joining Connor Cox and Reid Mikeska.
“After much prayer and consideration, I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal,” Elksnis wrote on Monday. “I want to thank coach (Shane) Beamer, (tight ends coach Shawn) Elliott and the entire staff at South Carolina for challenging me and helping me develop.”
In all, 12 Gamecocks have announced a decision to enter the transfer portal.
Elksnis joined the South Carolina roster ahead of the 2023 season after spending two seasons with the Florida Gators. During his two seasons with the Gamecocks, he appeared in 15 games but did not record any statistics.
With three tight ends in the portal and another — Joshua Simon — out of eligibility, South Carolina is thin at the position. As of Monday, the Gamecocks are projected to have four scholarship tight ends heading into the 2025 season: Brady Hunt, Michael Smith, Maurice Brown II and Mike Tyler, who signed with the Gamecocks last week.
It would be expected that the Gamecocks add a tight end or two via the transfer portal.
