Former South Carolina quarterback hired as in-state college offensive coordinator
Former South Carolina quarterback Seth Strickland has been named Charleston Southern’s new offensive coordinator, the school announced Sunday.
Strickland heads to the Lowcountry after spending the last two years in the Upstate in the same role on Bobby Lamb’s inaugural staff at Division II Anderson University.
Strickland played for Steve Spurrier at South Carolina from 2009 to 2012. His time at quarterback was mainly spent on the scout team early in his career, but he saw the field often from 2010 to 2012 while handling placeholder duties for the Gamecocks.
During the 2012 season, Strickland’s senior year, he was 4 of 6 on passes for 96 yards and a touchdown during his time under center.
The Laurens native got his coaching start at South Carolina. He spent six seasons under Spurrier and Will Muschamp in a variety of roles, including interim tight ends coach for the 2018 Outback Bowl.
Strickland also spent time with Spurrier in the now defunct Alliance of American Football. He served as on Spurrier’s quarterbacks coach for the Orlando Apollos.
“Seth’s experience under Coach Spurrier, both as a player and on his staff, will be valuable for us in the development of our offensive system for the 2024 season,” Charleston Southern head coach Gabe Giardina said in a news release.
Strickland also spent time as an offensive coordinator at IMG Academy as well as quarterbacks coach, recruiting coordinator and pass game coordinator with Giardina at Albany State during the 2021 season.
Charleston Southern went 1-11 last season after posting a 4-7 record in Giardina’s first season at the helm of the program in 2023. The Buccaneers’ lone win of 2024 came over ranked Furman in the second week of the season.
Another Gamecock connection
Giardina also announced Landon Martin as his new offensive line coach. Martin heads to Charleston Southern from Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee.
Martin got his coaching start at South Carolina as a graduate assistant in 2016. He spent five seasons with the Gamecocks as an offensive analyst and assistant offensive line coach.
Martin was also on staff at Newberry College from 2021 to 2023.
