Practice report: USC QBs split reps equally; two awarded scholarships
South Carolina’s quartet of quarterbacks has not let their competition affect their friendship, junior Perry Orth said.
“We get along unbelievably,” Orth said after Wednesday’s practice. “We have accepted (freshman Lorenzo Nunez) in just like we will the next quarterback that comes in. We all get along. We all hang out on the weekends. We are probably all about to go hang out at somebody’s house right now.”
The four have shared snaps evenly through the first two days of practice and none of them know when that will change or when the starter will be named, Orth said.
“You never know with Coach (Steve Spurrier),” Orth said.
Nunez’s transition is going smoothly so far, he said.
“It’s just faster and dudes are bigger. Everything else is pretty much the same,” he said. “I am picking it up as time goes on. Whatever coach needs or wants, I am going to do. It’s his call.”
Season lost. Junior offensive lineman Brock Stadnik was expected to compete for playing time at guard this season. Instead, he will miss the entire season due to offseason shoulder surgery, head coach Steve Spurrier said.
“I don’t know how much he’ll play in the future,” Spurrier said. “He may want to graduate and transfer. He’s going to be way behind these young guys we’ve got here now.”
Happy Trails. Spurrier wished South Carolina transfer Brendan Nosovitch the best of luck at Boston College, where Nosovitch is planning to play this fall.
“He’s a fine young man,” Spurrier said. “He helped our GPA, didn’t play a lot, but he’s a wonderful young man.”
Scholarship athletes. Orth and junior long-snapper Drew Williams were placed on scholarship during a team meeting Tuesday afternoon.
“They both have earned it, both had excellent summers,” Spurrier said. “If you don’t think the workouts in the summer are important, those two guys were right with the best of them. And that was part of the reason. Drew has been contributing, and we think Perry will contribute in the next several years.”
Place-kicker Landon Ard was placed on scholarship during the offseason.
New faces, numbers. Two players have switched jersey numbers – WR Matrick Belton is now No. 15 (was 29), and WR Sean Odom is now No. 87 (was 82). Walk-ons Tyler Ragsdale, John Dixon, Devin Dingle and Javon Charleston have been added to the roster.
Ragsdale – No. 41, LB, 6-0, 210, FR, Mt. Pleasant (Wando)
Dixon – No. 80, WR, 5-11, 185, FR, Alexandria, Va. (Episcopal)
Dingle – No. 85, WR, 5-10, 160, FR, Summerville (Cane Bay)
Charleston – No. 88, WR, 6-0, 185, FR, Gurnee, Ill. (Warren)
Injury report. Players who were injured or wore yellow jerseys were: DT Taylor Stallworth (pectoral), DE Gerald Dixon (leg), TE Connor Redmond (back), LB Jonathan Walton, DT Gerald Dixon Jr., OL Brock Stadnik (shoulder) and CB Rico McWilliams (hamstring).
Practice report. The Gamecocks were in shorts and helmets Wednesday. They’ll have the first of two days in shells (helmet and shoulder pads) before going to full pads on Saturday. USC will next practice at 9 a.m. on Thursday. It is closed to the public.
