South Carolina has made its first transfer portal addition of the spring window.

On Thursday, the Gamecocks are signing edge rusher Demon Clowney — the cousin of former South Carolina star Jadeveon Clowney — according to 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

And, well, Clowney has had quite the winding college career. He started at Ole Miss in 2020, transferred to Charlotte in 2023, transferred to Louisville in December, then hopped back in the portal a few months later. Now, Clowney’s fourth collegiate team will be the one where his last name is royalty.

But unlike Jadeveon, Demon Clowney did not play high school football in South Carolina. He was a pass rusher playing for Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore during a time when HBO made a documentary about the school’s football program called, “The cost of winning.”

He was a four-star prospect coming out of high school. But in his five collegiate seasons, Clowney has racked up 69 tackles and 6.5 sacks — most of which came during his two seasons with Charlotte.

And South Carolina has had recent success grabbing Charlotte transfers. Last year, the Gamecocks landed Demetrius Knight, who became one of their biggest leaders and top tacklers.

“We need to get our defensive tackle position solidified,” South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said this week. “We need to get that EDGE position solidified.”
