Transfer destination revealed for Dante Reno, former Gamecock QB
A former South Carolina quarterback has a new home.
Gamecocks transfer quarterback Dante Reno has committed to Yale, ESPN reported on Monday.
The son of Yale head football coach Tony Reno, he was a three-star prospect out of Cheshire Academy in Connecticut.
More notably: He was incredibly loyal to South Carolina, becoming the Gamecocks’ first 2024 commitment after making his pledge in July 2022. He never wavered from his decision and made a great effort to help recruit other top prospects to South Carolina.
In his one year at USC, Reno redshirted, appeared in just one game and mostly worked with the scout-team offense. But he came into this spring with seemingly a good shot at becoming the backup behind LaNorris Sellers.
Of the four scholarship quarterbacks competing for the backup job this spring, Reno was the only one who was a part of the Gamecocks’ quarterback room last year.
Of course there was competition — South Carolina brought in Ohio State transfer Air Noland, true freshman Cutter Woods and moved Luke Doty back to quarterback, a position he hadn’t fully played in three years.
But during the spring game, it was Reno who played the least. Heck, the only other garnet-team quarterback was Doty and he played almost three-fourths of the game. Reno, meanwhile, didn’t get a snap until the second half and was just 1-for-5 passing for 1 yard.
He was in the transfer portal less than a week later.
