Will Muschamp no longer at Georgia? Former USC coach moves on, reports say
Is Will Muschamp done with college coaching?
Multiple reports emerged Sunday that Muschamp, South Carolina’s football coach from 2016-20, was no longer listed among Georgia football’s support staffers.
Muschamp had been working with Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs since shortly after USC fired him in 2020 and served as co-defensive coordinator for two years.
He took a reduced role after the 2023 season and, heading into the 2025 season, is no longer formally affiliated with UGA, according to a copy of Georgia’s 2025 media guide reviewed by The State and first discovered by the Athens Banner-Herald.
The SEC is holding its annual football media days in Atlanta this week.
Muschamp worked as an analyst for Georgia in 2024, a smaller role that he took in order to be able to watch his younger son, Whit, play college football. Whit Muschamp was a true freshman quarterback at Vanderbilt last season.
Per the website Dawgs247, Muschamp worked with Georgia football during the week in 2024 and generally left campus on Thursdays. He was not with the Bulldogs on gameday until the 2024 SEC championship game against Texas in Atlanta.
Now, per Georgia’s media guide, he doesn’t have a formal UGA affiliation.
Will Muschamp’s coaching history, USC buyout
It’s unclear if this move means Muschamp is done with college coaching or just taking a break to focus on family. Muschamp, 53, has been coaching in some capacity for 30 years dating back to 1995.
Outside of serving as USC’s coach, he has been coach at Florida (2011-14) and defensive coordinator at LSU, Auburn and Texas. Muschamp is a three-time national champion (once with LSU in 2003, twice with Georgia in 2021-22).
When South Carolina fired Muschamp in November 2020, it was set to owe him 75% of his salary for the rest of his deal — a total of about $15.3 million spread out through the end of 2024, The State previously reported.
The two sides later agreed to a reduced lump sum buyout total of $12.9 million.
