Buddy Martin: It’s way too premature to count out Spurrier
Between now and the season-opener against North Carolina on Sept. 3, we will ask 50 people: “What do you think about the Gamecocks in 2015?” We’re counting down the days until kickoff. Today’s panelist is Buddy Martin, an Ocala, Fla., radio host and co-writer of Steve Spurrier’s upcoming autobiography:
“One of the most interesting and intriguing stories of the college football season will be the South Carolina Gamecocks and what coach Steve Spurrier is going to do or not do, because it has become such a big national narrative. Since Steve came out with his six guns blazing and did what he did and put it on the line and called out the quote-unquote enemies of South Carolina football, it really gets interesting now. The question is, ‘Can he get the job done?’ It’s going to be fun to watch, and I’m going to be following every minute of it. The people who start counting him out might be a little bit premature at this point in time. I have seen this before over the years. Even when he was a great college player, a lot of people don’t realize this, but as a college player many times, he brought the team back in the fourth quarter. It’s kind of his thing. I wouldn’t count him out.”
