Connor Shaw saw action in the Cleveland Browns’ preseason opener Thursday night against the Washington Redskins.

The South Carolina quarterback great was 5-of-10 passing for 64 yards, with all of his snaps coming in the second half. He also had one rush for four yards.

Washington won 20-17 in a game played at Cleveland’s FirstEnergy Stadium.

Shaw led three drives, with one ending in a field goal. His longest completions went for 23 and 22 yards.

Shaw was the third quarterback used by the Browns on Thursday after starter Josh McCown and backup Johnny Manziel. McCown was 5-for-5 for 33 yards and a touchdown. Manziel was 7-for-11 for 42 yards and scored on a 12-yard run.

Shaw is competing with veteran Thaddeus Lewis to be the third QB on the Browns’ roster. Lewis entered the game in the fourth quarter, going 2-of-4 for 15 yards and an interception.

The Browns host the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 20. Cleveland coach Mike Pettine earlier this week said coaches were impressed with Shaw’s increased arm strength.

Shaw started Cleveland’s Week 17 game last season against the Baltimore Ravens.
