Gamecocks lock in logo choice for football helmets. Do you like it?
A bigger logo on South Carolina’s football helmets was a hit with fans and players last season.
Gamecock coach Shane Beamer says you can expect to see it even more often this year. And the bigger Block C the team wore several times last year will have a chance to be the main helmet logo this season.
“The bigger logo last year was very popular with our players,” Beamer said Thursday at his media day a press conference on the eve before the team’s practice. “They wanted to wear it.”
South Carolina’s social media team teased the change in a video posted last week. In the 11-second clip, it showed a helmet with a smaller Block C logo being pushed off with a helmet sporting the bigger logo moving forward with an announcer’s voice yelling, “He’s back.”
The Gamecocks wore the bigger logo on their helmets for the first time when they wore their throwback uniforms against Akron on Sept. 21. USC also had the bigger logo on the helmets three other times against Alabama, Missouri and in the Gator Bowl against Illinois.
Last season, USC wore a smaller circular logo with the Block C in it with its garnet helmets similar to the ones worn in the 1980s and 1990s when they played Vanderbilt. As it turns out, the bigger logo is the one the players wanted to see.
Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers even texted Beamer about it when the coach was on a family trip earlier this month.
“LaNorris texted me two or three weeks ago when I was at dinner in Charleston and he was texting me helmets that he liked or would be cool to wear this upcoming season,” Beamer said. “I know the players like it so I asked some of those guys, ‘Which one do you guys like?’ — and they loved it. Our fans liked the bigger logo. So that is what we are trending towards, the big logo.”
