South Carolina transfer edge rusher out for extended time with injury
With just under two weeks before South Carolina kicks off its 2025 season against Virginia Tech, the Gamecocks lost some depth at the edge position.
South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said pass rusher George Wilson Jr. will be out “for a while” with an undisclosed injury.
“(He) was going to play for us this season,” Beamer told reporters. “We’ve kind of gotten hit pretty good at that (edge) spot, which is disappointing from a depth standpoint.”
Wilson transferred to South Carolina this summer after two season at Campbell, where he played in 21 games and notched nine sacks.
Wilson began his career at Florida State in 2021, but played in just three games across two seasons and entered the transfer portal following the 2022 season.
Transfer edge Jaylen Brown (Missouri) was lost to a knee injury in the spring. And Beamer a week ago announced true freshman edge Kobby Sakyi-Prah had a “lower body injury” and said, “I wouldn’t expect him back any time soon.”
Beamer highlighted the experience the team has on the edge from returners Dylan Stewart, Jatius Geer and Bryan Thomas Jr., with the additional depth from Desmond Umeozulu and newcomers Jaquavious Dodd and Anthony Addison.
Technically, Wilson was going to be out of eligibility after this season but this might open the door for him to return in 2026.
“We’ll see what happens this year, but we’re already working to get him back in 2026,” Beamer said. “What I told him is maybe this is a positive … If you’re not able to get back in ’25, you have an entire offseason in the weight room where you should be an even better version of yourself in 2026.”
