Shane Beamer updates South Carolina’s injuries from Virginia Tech game
South Carolina lost one of its top defensive backs in its season opener Sunday.
Starting defensive back Judge Collier suffered a knee injury on the first drive of the game against Virginia Tech.
His status?
“To be determined,” USC coach Shane Beamer said after the game, a 24-11 Gamecocks win. “It’s a little bit of a knee injury. We’ll see when we get back to Columbia. ... Losing Judge was a big loss.”
Collier was on crutches during the sidelines in the second half with a brace on his left leg.
The injury occurred during the first quarter. Collier played a few plays after going down but then went into the medical tent. Myles Norwood and Vicari Swain took Collier’s spot in the secondary.
Collier played all 12 games as a freshman with two starts. As a sophomore, he started all 13 games last season for the Gamecocks, had 28 tackles and led the team with eight pass breakups.
Freshman offensive lineman Shed Sarratt was injured in August practice and didn’t make the trip to Atlanta but was expected to contribute if available.
“He’s been out for a couple weeks,” Beamer said. “I thought we were going to get him back but he just wasn’t ready.”
Beamer did not address the status of defensive back Gerald Kilgore, who left the game with an apparent right hand injury.
