Roars in the rain: South Carolina student section goes strong in weather delay
Just around 6:40 p.m., as a weather delay continued at Williams-Brice Stadium, the student section erupted. The kind of giddy screams that had you looking around for signs this game was being played.
Any announcement that the Gamecocks’ home-opener against S.C. State was close to starting? Any signs of players? Any signs of the field getting set up?
No. No. And no.
The eruption came once the thousands of students piled into the Cockpit felt the rain start pouring on them.
Oh, to be in college again.
As the rain showered Williams-Brice Stadium, most Gamecock fans — heck, most normal people — sought shelter. They got up out of their seats and ran to the concourse. Ran to some dry part of the stadium.
Not the South Carolina students. Thousands of them stayed put — perhaps to ensure they saved their first-come, first-served seats. And perhaps because they were having a blast. As the rain got heavier, the raucous applause from the student section only intensified. They began waving towels, jumping up and down, starting chants of “Game!” ... “Cocks!”
At 7:05, a huge bolt of lightning accompanied by an echo of thunder erupted over Williams-Brice Stadium.
The student section, of course, let out a loud cheer.
By 7:10, as the rain grew heavier with no end in sight, a number of the students finally relented and began to seek shelter. But, naturally, there were plenty were seemed keen on waiting out the rain.
