South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt betting odds
South Carolina is the favorite, but not by much. The Gamecocks opened as 8.5-point favorites but that spread is down to four points, according to the VegasInsider consensus line. Most major sportsbooks had the Gamecocks as a 4- or 4.5-point favorite as of Thursday. South Carolina has a 65% chance to win, according to ESPN Analytics.
Injury updates
South Carolina had two players listed on Thursday night’s SEC student-athlete availability report. Defensive back Judge Collier is listed as out and tight end Brady Hunt is listed as probable. Defensive backs Vicari Swain, Brandon Cisse and Jaquel Holman were all listed as probable on Wednesday night’s report but their absence on Thursday’s report signals they’re are all good to go for Saturday.
Weather forecast for Columbia
Gamecock fans had to sit through a nearly two-and-a-half-hour weather delay last weekend against S.C. State. It looks like that won’t be an issue with the Vanderbilt matchup. The forecast for Saturday is for temperatures in the mid-80s during tailgating, then mid- to upper-70s at kickoff and upper-60s by game’s end, according to the National Weather Service — all with a negigible chance of rain.
Top storylines for the game
Keeping the streak alive: South Carolina holds a 16-game win streak against Vanderbilt. It’s the program’s longest win streak versus any opponent all-time. The Gamecocks haven’t lost to the Commodores since losing back-to-back matchups in the 2007-08 seasons. South Carolina leads the all-time series 30-4.
Diego Pavia has the game circled: Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia this summer in a podcast interview said he had the South Carolina game circled. Pavia didn’t provide any specific reasoning why he felt that way, and Gamecock fans on social media seemed to take issue with the comments more than Beamer’s players did (publicly, at least). It’ll be interesting to see how Pavia, who was relatively contained in USC’s 28-7 win over Vanderbilt last year, performs in Columbia on Saturday.
SEC opener: South Carolina’s matchup with Vanderbilt will be its toughest yet. The Gamecocks are hoping to win their SEC opener for the second-straight season after dropping their conference opener for six straight years from 2018-23. A win would also make South Carolina 3-0 for the first time since 2012.
South Carolina and Vanderbilt players to watch
South Carolina DB Vicari Swain: Swain, once again, is a player to watch. He returned two punts for touchdowns against S.C. State last week and earned SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors again for his efforts. Swain’s three returns for touchdowns is tied for the program’s single-season record set by Dick Harris back in 1971.
South Carolina WR Vandrevius Jacobs: The redshirt sophomore wideout logged a few firsts in last week’s win over S.C. State. Jacobs caught his first touchdown pass as a Gamecock and recorded his first four catches of the season. Jacobs led the team in receiving last week with 57 yards, two shy of his career-high.
Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia: The Commodores’ veteran quarterback earned high praise from Beamer this week. Pavia has big-play capabilities on the ground and through the air. Last year he amassed over 3,000 yards of total offense and 28 touchdowns. He’s already totaled 468 passing yards and five touchdowns through two games this season.
Vanderbilt TE Eli Stowers: Stowers led Vanderbilt in receiving last year with 638 receiving yards, five touchdowns and 49 receptions. Those numbers earned him an All-SEC First Team nod. Stowers is expected to have the same, if not bigger, impact this season for the Commodores.
