Shane Beamer offers update on LaNorris Sellers, QB situation after Vanderbilt loss
South Carolina suffered a few injuries on Saturday night in a 31-7 loss to Vanderbilt in the Gamecocks’ SEC opener.
Most notably, starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers exited the game in the second quarter following a big hit. Sellers went down hard on a hit that was eventually deemed a targeting penalty. He was replaced by Luke Doty for the remainder of the game.
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer had no update on Sellers’ status immediately after the game. He did not say exactly what was wrong with Sellers, though trainers took his helmet from him and walked him to a seat on the sidelines.
“Injury wise, don’t have an update for you on LaNorris,” Beamer said.

Sellers was 6-for-7 through the air with 94 yards and an interception when he left the game. He did, however, lead the Gamecocks on a seven play, 75-yard scoring drive in the first quarter.
“It was heartbreaking seeing him going out,” USC defensive back Jalon Kilgore said. “Hopefully he can get healthy fast.”
South Carolina’s offense struggled without Sellers, who was not spotted on the sideline in the second half. The Gamecocks weren’t able to put any more points on the scoreboard after he left the game and turned the ball over three more times.
“When you lose the leader of your football team and you lose your starting quarterback like that — we were doing a lot of good things,” Beamer said. ...”I was pleased with a lot of the stuff we were doing offensively. I told the team at halftime that we’ve got to go out and continue to play good football, because we were doing a lot of really good stuff. But I don’t like the way to like the way that we started the second half offensively.”
Beamer was asked after the game whether Doty would retain the starting quarterback job if Sellers has to miss time. He answered by saying “it’s too soon” to say.
“We’ll look at everything,” Beamer said. “Luke was in there tonight, and we all got to be better. We’ll evaluate everything as we go into the Missouri week. I understand the question, but way too soon for that.”
Sellers was “getting checked on by the doctors” at halftime, according to Doty.
“I went and talked to him and told him we’ve got his back and we’re going to do what we can to come back and win this thing,” Doty said. “It’s unfortunate we didn’t. That’s on me and all of us.
“We wish him a speedy recovery. He’ll be back soon.”
Other injury updates
South Carolina also lost starting tackle Cason Henry in the second quarter.
Henry went to the injury tent midway through the quarter with an athletic trainer and holding his left arm. He exited the tent a few minutes later and went to the locker room early. Henry did not return to the game, instead watching from the sideline while in pads.
Much like Sellers’ status, Beamer said he did not have an update on Henry after the game.
