South Carolina drops hints about its QB situation for Missouri game

Mum was the word for South Carolina coach Shane Beamer when asked about the health status of his star quarterback.

In the Gamecocks’ 31-7 loss to Vanderbilt, LaNorris Sellers left the game late in the second quarter with what has been reported as a concussion. Backup Luke Doty came in and finished out the game, and failed to lead the offense to single point.

During his weekly press conference Tuesday, Beamer was asked about Sellers’ health.

“We have an injury report for SEC games that we release on Wednesday nights,” Beamer said, failing to delve into specifics.

What the USC head coach did admit, though, is a consistent policy he has with his football team: If a player isn’t able to practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, they won’t suit up on Saturday.

So, in theory, if Sellers doesn’t practice on Tuesday or Wednesday, the SEC-mandated injury report should provide a clear indication of the quarterback’s status for South Carolina’s matchup with Missouri.

What Beamer did admit: Doty is still the backup quarterback.

Always competition for South Carolina’s backup QB

He noted, as he always does, that there is always competition. So, technically, Ohio State transfer Air Noland and true freshman Cutter Woods are still battling for the opportunity to be the backup quarterback.

But, Beamer said, “if the game was today and LaNorris was not able to play then, yes, Luke would be the starter.”

With that, though, Doty said after Tuesday’s practice that “we’re business as usual.”

“Reps are pretty much the same as they have been,” Doty continued. “Everybody is getting reps. Everybody is continuing to get better and compete. So it’s just a normal Tuesday around here.”

Whether Sellers was a part of this “normal Tuesday” is still not known.
