Gamecock QB great Connor Shaw in hospital after apparent health scare
Former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw was hospitalized Wednesday night after reportedly collapsing at his son’s football game.
Shaw, 33, was in the medical ICU at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital as of Thursday morning, according to a source. He was in stable condition, according to a statement from the city of Simpsonville.
“While coaching his son’s AU football team at Gracely Park on Wednesday night, Connor Shaw collapsed about 15 minutes after the game started. EMS arrived on scene and took Mr. Shaw to Greenville Memorial,” according to the statement. “The Simpsonville Parks Dept. has been informed Mr. Shaw is in stable condition. Mr. Shaw and his family are in the thoughts and prayers of the employees of Parks and Rec and City of Simpsonville and we wish for a speedy and full recovery.”
CPR was performed on the scene, an eyewitness told The State.
The game was played in Simpsonville as part of the Simpsonville Recreation Department.
A quarterback at USC from 2010-13, Shaw was elected to the South Carolina athletics hall of fame in 2021. He holds the record for most wins by a Gamecocks quarterback and finished his career with 6,074 passing yards and 56 touchdowns.
He was signed out of college by the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and played in the NFL with the Browns and Chicago Bears until 2016.
Shaw was the quarterbacks coach at USC for three games in 2020 before transitioning to the team’s director of player development. He served as the director of football relations in 2021.
He, wife Molly and their family lived in Lexington for a few years before moving to the Upstate.
