Top storylines of the game
Remembering last year: LSU eked out a 36-33 win over South Carolina last year in Williams-Brice. The Gamecocks had a potential game-winning pick-six taken off the board by a penalty that bewildered Shane Beamer and USC fans. LSU scored a go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute left, and South Carolina missed a game-tying field goal try as time expired. Beamer says he hasn’t brought up last year’s game to this year’s team, but that doesn’t mean the players don’t remember it and aren’t using it as motivation.
Nussmeier vs Sellers: You can argue that Garrett Nussmeier won last year’s QB duel by default because LSU went home with a win. Granted, LaNorris Sellers left the game early with an injury. Sellers threw for 113 yards and an interception in the game but had 88 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. Nussmeier threw for 285 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against South Carolina last year. Fans should get to see a complete battle this weekend between two of the top quarterbacks in the SEC, and arguably in the country.
Has the run game turned the corner?: After a rough start to the year, South Carolina found some positive momentum on the ground the last time out against Kentucky. The Gamecocks ran the ball a season-high 48 times for 178 yards. The three touchdowns scored via the run game was more than South Carolina had totaled in the previous four games combined.
Start of a gauntlet: South Carolina’s game against LSU is the first of five straight Top 25 matchups coming up on the Gamecocks’ schedule. South Carolina sits at 3-2 and will need to sneak a win or two out of the next five games if it wants to keep its bowl hopes alive. The back half of the season won’t be easy for the Gamecocks, but that’s life in the SEC.
South Carolina and LSU players to watch
South Carolina WR Vandrevius Jacobs: Jacobs has been South Carolina’s best wide receiver this season. He leads the team in catches (18), yards (323) and touchdowns (two) through the first five games. Jacobs has recorded over 100 receiving yards in back-to-back games. Keep an eye out for Jacobs in the passing game on Saturday. He’ll be wearing No. 4, switching his jersey number from No. 19 with tight end Michael Smith’s departure from the program.
South Carolina RB Matthew Fuller: The sophomore led the team with 19 carries against Kentucky. While Beamer didn’t say it was necessarily a sign of him creeping up the depth chart, it was the most snaps Fuller has seen this season. Perhaps it’s a sign of more to come. Or maybe it’s just the Gamecocks trying anything to get a sputtering running-game on track.
LSU LB Harold Perkins Jr.: Perkins is one of the most versatile defenders in the SEC, and arguably the country. He’s a 6-foot-1, 222 pound linebacker, and Beamer praised him for his capacity to play Sam linebacker and nickel back as a big part of LSU’s defense. Perkins has 20 total tackles this year along with two tackles for loss and a sack.
LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier: The veteran quarterback has thrown for 1,159 yards and seven touchdowns this year. This is Nussmeier’s second year as LSU’s starting quarterback, though it’s his fifth year of college football. ESPN polled 25 NFL scouts and executives in September on who they think is the top quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Nussmeier received the second-highest amount of votes, second only to LaNorris Sellers.
