About South Carolina

South Carolina is back to .500 for its overall record (and 1-3 in the SEC) after a 20-10 loss to LSU. The Gamecocks defense played well enough to keep it close, forcing four LSU turnovers. The offense, however, held the team back. USC was out-gained 402 yards to 317 yards, gave up two turnovers and had seven offensive pre-snap penalties for 35 yards. It was far from the clean operation one might expect coming off of a bye week, and now Shane Beamer’s team will need to regroup before another ranked matchup.

About Oklahoma

The Sooners started the year 5-0 before heading to the Cotton Bowl for a Red River Rivalry bout against the Texas Longhorns. Oklahoma lost 23-6 and is now 1-1 in the SEC this season, dropping eight spots to No. 14 in the AP poll. The Sooners offense couldn’t record a touchdown against a Longhorns defense that recorded three turnovers, settling for two field goals. Oklahoma’s trip to Williams-Brice Stadium marks two games in a row away from home.

Players to watch: Gamecocks and Sooners

South Carolina

LaNorris Sellers, QB: Sellers had a rough showing against the Tigers. He went 15 for 27 with just 124 yards passing, an interception and zero passing touchdowns. He took five sacks and committed two intentional grounding penalties. Fans have passed blame on offensive coordinator Mike Shula for a lot of the year’s shortcomings, but Saturday’s loss to LSU was Sellers’ worst individual performance this season.

DQ Smith, DB: Smith held down the fort for a Gamecock secondary that saw Jalon Kilgore and Brandon Cisse go out with injuries against LSU. Beamer alluded to both being available going forward , but Smith showed he can lead the way . He finished with eight tackles, half a tackle for loss and a key interception against the Tigers. He may get more reps against premier targets as his position group works toward getting healthy.

Oklahoma

John Mateer, QB: Mateer returned against Texas just 17 days removed from surgery on his right hand. He struggled, throwing for three interceptions and no touchdowns against the Longhorns. Prior to the injury, he’d racked up over 1,000 passing yards, six touchdowns without a pick. Time will tell if an extra week of recovery and practice reps will help his performance against the Gamecocks.

Kendal Daniels, LB: The senior Beggs, Oklahoma product had the best individual performance against Texas for a Sooners defense that struggled over all. He finished with four solo tackles (six total) and two tackles for loss in the game. A transfer from Oklahoma State, Daniels has recorded 20 total tackles this season.
