The South Carolina football team returns to Williams-Brice Stadium for the first time in almost a month, set to play the first of two straight games against ranked opponents.

The Gamecocks host No. 14 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. It’s USC’s first afternoon home game of the season.

Both teams are coming off losses. LSU defeated South Carolina, 20-10, last week while Oklahoma lost to rival Texas, 23-6, in the Red River Rivalry.

It will be Oklahoma’s first trip to South Carolina. The Gamecocks won the first game between the two teams, 35-9, last season.

South Carolina vs Oklahoma betting odds

Oklahoma opened as a 3.5-point favorite. That line has increased during the week.

The Sooners are now a 5.5-point favorite, according to the VegasInsider consensus. Oklahoma is 2-2 against the spread as a 5.5-point or higher favorite this season. South Carolina is 1-1 as a 5.5-point underdog or greater this season.

Injury updates

South Carolina had seven players listed on the latest SEC student athlete availability report released Thursday night. Four are out and won’t play vs. Oklahoma: offensive linemen Nolan Hay and Cason Henry, as well as receiver Brian Rowe Jr. and defensive lineman Davonte Miles. Rowe is tied for third in receptions with 10.

Starting defensive back Brandon Cisse and defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy were listed as probable. Cisse was injured last week against LSU and didn’t play the second half.

Beamer said on Thursday’s “Carolina Calls” radio show that Cisse should be good to go and he’s optimistic about Brownlow-Dindy.

The SEC injury report will be updated daily up until 90 minutes before kickoff Saturday.

Three Oklahoma offensive linemen were listed out: Troy Everett, Jacob Sexton and Jake Taylor.

Weather forecast for Columbia

According to AccuWeather, the forecast is a good one Saturday with sunny skies and temperature at 80 degrees with a 6 mph wind. There is no chance of precipitation.

Top storylines of the game

Coaching change: South Carolina coach Shane Beamer made a coaching change on Sunday, firing offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley. Tight ends coach Shawn Elliott will replace Teasley and has a lot of experience in the role. Elliott was Appalachian State’s offensive line coach for nine seasons and was the Gamecocks’ O-line coach from 2010-16 during his first stint with the program.

Beamer said this week they will be tweaking the scheme on the offensive line. Players said Elliott was more hands-on in practice.

Elliott will be taking over a group that has battled injuries and has struggled in pass protection. USC has given up 20 sacks, second most in the SEC.

Cutting down on penalties: One of Elliott and the team’s emphasis this week will be cutting down on penalties.

The Gamecocks are the second-most penalized team in the country (55 total), and the biggest culprits have been the offensive linemen. Through six games, the South Carolina offensive line has committed 15 penalties, 11 coming before the snap.

USC had 13 penalties last week against LSU, second-most this season. South Carolina had 14 penalties for 98 yards in the 29-20 loss to Missouri earlier this year.

Venables back in South Carolina: While it will be Oklahoma’s first trip to Williams-Brice Stadium, Sooners coach Brent Venables is no stranger to the venue.

Venables spent 10 years as defensive coordinator in Dabo Swinney’s staff at Clemson, the Gamecocks’ top rival.

Venables, a defensive-minded head coach, has the Sooners atop the SEC in defense and will be the Gamecocks’ toughest test this season. Oklahoma is allowing just 9.3 points a game and a conference-best 211.1 yards per game.

South Carolina and OU players to watch

South Carolina DE Dylan Stewart: The sophomore was a force last week against LSU with five tackles (two for loss) and two quarterback hurries. Stewart had a sack last season against the Sooners and was part of the dominating defensive performance.

Through six games this season, Stewart has 27 tackles, leads the SEC with 9.5 tackles for loss and has 3.5 sacks.

South Carolina RB Matthew Fuller: Sophomore had his biggest moment of his career last week with his 72-yard touchdown run against LSU. After the touchdown, Fuller didn’t touch the ball again until the second half.

Beamer talked this week about wanting to get Fuller more, but he still will be part of the rotation that includes senior Rahsul Faison.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer: The Washington State transfer returned to the Sooners’ lineup last week after missing one game after a hand surgery. Mateer struggled last week but has been one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

Mateer leads the SEC in passing yards per game (283.4) and has thrown for 1,417 yards and six touchdowns.

Oklahoma DL Mason Thomas: The senior was an SEC second-team selection season and is off to a good start this year. Thomas has 16 tackles (six for loss) and is near the top of the SEC in sacks with four.
