Recap, scoring plays: South Carolina struggles in loss to No. 14 Oklahoma
South Carolina struggled mightily in a 26-7 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday in Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Gamecocks drop to 3-4 (1-4) on the year with the loss and the No. 14 Sooners improve to 6-1 (2-1 SEC).

1st quarter

Gamecocks shut out in second half
South Carolina failed to score any points in the second half.
The Gamecocks lone points came in the second quarter. All but one of South Carolina’s second half offensive drives ended in its own territory.
Cutter Woods enters game for South Carolina
True freshman Cutter Woods has entered the game at quarterback for the Gamecocks with just over two minutes left in the game. This is Woods’ first appearance of his young college career.
LaNorris Sellers finished the day 17-for-25 through the air for 124 yards and a touchdown. He ran the ball 14 times in the game.
Cutter drove the Gamecocks 59 yards down the field in eight plays but threw an interception with 36 seconds left on the clock. He was 4-for-6 through the air with 46 passing yards and added 13 rushing yards.
Quarterback punt leads to a safety
Oklahoma QB John Mateer punted a ball with just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Mateer’s 40-yard punt pinned South Carolina on it’s own goal line. Gamecock running back Matt Fuller attempted to give South Carolina some breathing room but was tackled in his own end zone for a safety.
Fake punt fail
South Carolina attempted to dip into its bag of Beamer Ball tricks down 17-7 in the third quarter but came up empty.
The Gamecocks called a fake punt on fourth down around midfield. Mason Love took the snap and dropped back to pass instead of punting, but he fired a pass directly into the hands of an Oklahoma defender.
Taylor Wein took the interception back just three yards but it gave Oklahoma the ball at the South Carolina 49-yard line to start the ensuing drive. Oklahoma was able to score a few plays later.
Quick first half breakdown
Oklahoma leads 14-7 at halftime but it doesn’t feel like a one-score game.
The Sooners are out gaining South Carolina 223-109 and their average yards gained per play is nearly double that of the Gamecocks (6.1 to 3.4). Oklahoma came into the game averaging 122.3 rushing yards per game (No. 13 in the SEC) and already has 136 yards against South Carolina.
South Carolina had an opportunity to cut into the lead as the clock expired but couldn’t capitalize. The Gamecocks were driving into Oklahoma territory with less than a minute left but South Carolina couldn’t get stop the clock with enough time to send the field goal team out.
Boo bird sighting in Williams-Brice
Fans started booing the Gamecocks after an abysmal drive in the second quarter.
South Carolina went three and out after LaNorris Sellers was sacked on back-to-back plays to start the drive. The Gamecocks gained just seven yards on 3rd and 26, bringing the total yards gained on the drive to negative nine.
As South Carolina sent out the punt team fans began chanting “Fire Shula”, referring to Gamecock offensive coordinator Mike Shula.
South Carolina shutout in first quarter
The Gamecocks failed to score in the first quarter. It’s just the third time this season the Gamecocks have been shutout in the first quarter.
South Carolina drove deep into Oklahoma territory on its first drive of the game but came up short. The Gamecocks failed to covert on fourth and goal, giving the Sooners the ball back on their own three-yard line.
South Carolina went three and out on its second drive of the game.
Gamecock star exits on first drive
South Carolina star EDGE rusher Dylan Stewart entered the injury tent on the first drive of the game.
He exited the tent shortly after, accompanied by athletic trainers, and went straight to the locker room with 9:42 left in the first quarter.
Stewart returned from the locker room with 4:40 left in the first quarter. He was on a stationary bike and being monitored by athletic trainers on the sideline. Stewart returned to the game in the second quarter but found himself in the injury tent again with 12 minutes left in the quarter.
ESPN reported Stewart will be out for the remainder of the game shortly before halftime.
The final injury report
South Carolina has four players listed as out on Saturday’s SEC injury report. Those players are offensive linemen Nolan Hay and Cason Henry, wide receiver Brian Rowe and defensive lineman Davonte Miles.
Offensive lineman Jatavius Shivers is listed as a game-time decision.
Gamecock captains
South Carolina’s captains for Saturday’s matchup against Oklahoma are tight end Jordan Dingle, quarterback Luke Doty and linebackers Fred “JayR” Johnson and Shawn Murphy.
South Carolina uniform combo
The Gamecocks are going white-garnet-white against the Sooners. South Carolina’s white helmets have a white facemask and a garnet and black stripe. The garnet jerseys have the usual black and white stripes on the shoulders and the white pants have the normal garnet and black stripes down the side.
Final betting line
South Carolina opened as a 3.5-point underdog to Oklahoma but is now a 4-point underdog, according to the VegasInsider consensus.
The Gamecocks have a 45.2% chance of winning the game, according to ESPN Analytics.
