Cocky looks on during the second half of South Carolina’s game against Oklahoma at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Special To The State

South Carolina football is looking to get back in the win column for the first time in nearly a month.

The Gamecocks (3-4, 1-4 SEC) will take on No. 4 Alabama (6-1, 4-0 SEC) in Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.

South Carolina is looking to avoid a third-straight loss. USC lost to Oklahoma last week 26-7. The Gamecocks have only lost three games in a row once during Shane Beamer’s tenure. That came when South Carolina lost four consecutive games in 2023.

Alabama has won six straight games since losing to Florida State in its season opener. The Crimson Tide beat Tennessee last weekend 37-20.

Alabama leads the all-time series vs. USC 12-4, including a close 27-25 win in Tuscaloosa last year. The two teams have only played three times in the last 15 years. South Carolina’s one win in that period came in 2010, when the Gamecocks upset then-No. 1 Alabama 35-21 in Williams-Brice Stadium.

Weather forecast for Columbia

Fans in town for South Carolina vs Alabama are in for perfect football weather.

Top storylines of the game

All eyes on Mike Shula: Boos were frequent from the stands in Williams-Brice Stadium during an abysmal performance from South Carolina’s offense in last week’s loss to Oklahoma. To make matters worse, those boos were accompanied by “Fire Shula” chants. The Gamecocks haven’t been able to get much going under their first-year offensive coordinator in 2025. Last week South Carolina cobbled together a season-low 224 total yards and only scored seven points. The Gamecocks are dead last in the SEC for total offense.

Can the Gamecocks turn it around? Last year, South Carolina found itself with a 3-3 record before reeling off six wins, four of which came over Top 25 opponents, to finish the regular season 9-3. The Gamecocks have found momentum late in the season before, but will they be able to do it again this year? Alabama is the third-straight Top 25 opponent USC has played. The Gamecocks still have two road tests against Top 10 opponents left on the schedule.

Looking for 2010 magic: Fifteen years ago, South Carolina upset then-No. 1 Alabama at Williams-Brice Stadium 35-21. While the circumstances were different (the Gamecocks were 3-1 and ranked No. 19 entering the game), maybe South Carolina can finish off the upset this year after they fell just short of doing so last year in Tuscaloosa.

South Carolina and Alabama players to watch

South Carolina WR Jayden Sellers: While the obvious player to watch would be Jayden’s older brother, starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers, the younger Sellers had a solid showing last week against Oklahoma. Jayden played a season-high 31 snaps against the Sooners and led the team with six catches for 57 yards. The true freshman has now played in three games this season.

South Carolina DB DQ Smith: Despite missing a game this season, Smith has played the most snaps of any Gamecock on defense in 2025. Smith leads the Gamecocks with 38 tackles this season and has the best Pro Football Focus tackle grade of anyone on the team.

Alabama QB Ty Simpson: Simpson is the best quarterback in the SEC this season and has a case to be called the best in the country. He leads the conference with 18 touchdowns and has thrown just one interception. Simpson is No. 2 in the SEC with 1,931 passing yards, and his completion percentage (70.2%) is just shy of being the best in the conference.

Alabama DB Bray Hubbard: No one has logged more snaps on defense this season for the Crimson Tide than Hubbard. The junior has tallied three interceptions this season, tied for the most in the SEC. He’s logged 36 total tackles this season (third on the team) and is one of Alabama’s highest graded defenders, according to Pro Football Focus.
