South Carolina wide receivers coach Mike Furrey will call offensive plays going forward, Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer announced Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference.

The news comes just days after Beamer fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula after South Carolina (3-6, 1-6) lost to No. 7 Ole Miss, the Gamecocks fourth-straight conference loss.

Beamer also noted that the Gamecocks won’t have one true offensive coordinator.

“We have a really talented offensive staff,” Beamer said. “As we always do, the offensive staff will work together — which they’ve been doing — to put together the game plan. And then on game day, the primary play caller will be Mike Furry.

“But, like I said, the plan and what we’re calling,” Beamer continued, “that’s put together during the week. He will just be the main guy who’s talking to the quarterback and communicating the play to him on game day.”

Furrey, a former NFL receiver, is in his second season on the Gamecocks’ staff but has been a head coach at Division II Limestone and Kentucky Christian. He also spent time in the NFL on Chicago Bears coaching staff.

Led by Furrey, the offensive coaches will certainly have their work cut out.

Through nine games, South Carolina’s offense ranks last in the SEC in points scored and total yards. The Gamecocks are on a bye this week and face No. 3 Texas A&M in College Station next Saturday.

“(He’s) high energy, has a great confidence about himself,” Beamer said of Furrey. “Certainly the offense feels his energy.”

Furrey does have experience calling plays. While the head coach at Limestone in Gaffney, South Carolina in 2022 and 2023, he was the lead play-caller in nearly every game (he gave away play-calling duties in 2023, then took them back after a few weeks).

Limestone had the second-best offense in the South Atlantic Conference in both 2022 and 2023, averaging over 30 points in both seasons. In 2023, it led the conference in total yards (448.2 per game), using a heavy passing attack.
