Last week, bowl eligibility was on the line. This week, it’s about pride.

South Carolina is 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the SEC after wrapping up a grueling conference slate with a heartbreaking loss on the road against Texas A&M. All that’s left for the season is to end on a high note and show any potential outgoing transfers that there’s something to stick around for.

The Gamecocks’ new two-game campaign begins with a home contest against the 6-4 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Here’s everything you need to know about the next USC game.

About South Carolina

Once hopeful and promising, the Gamecocks’ season fell apart in SEC play. The team can’t do any better than a 5-7 finish, one win short of the six-win mark that’s historically needed to make a bowl game. Things seemed to be on the rise under interim play caller Mike Furrey as USC led Texas A&M 30-3 in the first half, but the Gamecocks were shut out in the second half and lost 31-30.

The only thing left for the Gamecocks is trying to pick up a pair of wins to end the year against two in-state opponents, including cross-conference rival Clemson.

About Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina has had an impressive turnaround this year in Tim Beck’s third season as head coach. After starting the season 2-3, the Chanticleers went on a four-game winning streak and put themselves in the running for a Sun Belt Championship game berth. However, a 45-40 loss to Georgia Southern ended those hopes and clinched the spot for James Madison. Coastal Carolina is now 6-4 on the year and will play the Gamecocks and the Dukes to close out the year. Winning those games would only increase the chances of the bowl-eligible Chanticleers playing in a better bowl game.

Players to watch: Gamecocks and Chanticleers

South Carolina

LaNorris Sellers, QB: Sellers just had one of his best games of the season . He threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns on 15 of 30 passing against Texas A&M. He took some debilitating late-game sacks and missed a few throws, but overall looked much-improved. Continued improvement would be a welcome sight in the last two weeks, but Sellers is the player to watch for a different reason: He’ll choose between returning to USC, entering the NFL Draft or hitting the transfer portal in just a few weeks. How the last two games go could influence his decision.

Dylan Stewart, edge rusher: Stewart also had a solid game against the Aggies, finishing with a sack, a pass breakup and a forced fumble that was scooped up by Nick Barrett and brought back for a touchdown. Stewart should dominate against a Coastal Carolina team that’s allowed 18 sacks this season. Stewart also has a decision to make this offseason. He’s not draft-eligible for another year, but which program he suits up for next season isn’t set in stone.

Coastal Carolina

Samari Collier, QB: Collier started the season as Coastal’s third-string quarterback. Across five games played with the Chanticleers, Collier’s recorded 898 yards and 14 touchdowns combined through the air and on the ground. Besides his stats, the real reason to look out for Collier is his health. He went out in the second quarter of the Georgia Southern game with a leg injury and was later seen on crutches. There’s no current update on his status.

Xamarion Gordon, DB: Gordon, a transfer from Southern California, has dominated opposing pass threats this season. He’s posted two interceptions with five pass breakups, and he leads the team with 56 total tackles. Expect Gordon to be everywhere on defense against the Gamecocks.
