LaNorris Sellers drops hint about his future at South Carolina
South Carolina coach Shane Beamer and quarterback LaNorris Sellers are already talking about next season.
Not because USC can’t reach bowl eligibility with two weeks left in the regular season, but because rumors are swirling about Sellers’ future plans.
At one point, the NFL and a first-round draft selection were forgone conclusions for Sellers in 2026. Now, as the redshirt sophomore QB nears the end of a down season statistically, things appear to be a little more fluid.
Some national pundits are even speculating about Sellers staying in school and hitting the transfer portal — if he decides not to turn pro.
The Ringer’s Todd McShay said Thursday on the “Todd McShay Show” that he felt Sellers should stay in college another season rather than try his luck in the NFL Draft. He added that should Sellers stay in school, he’ll be pursued by other programs (McShay mentioned Miami as a potential suitor).
Sellers, speaking Saturday after South Carolina’s 31-30 loss to Texas A&M, wasn’t ready to say where his mind’s at, but he did end his remarks with an interesting line in favor of USC.
“When the time comes to make those decisions, it’s just gonna be there,” he said. “Everybody’s got decisions to make, but I plan on being here because I’m here right now.”
Was that a hint about which way Sellers is leaning? Time will tell.
Beamer had a bit more to say than his QB about the matter.
“I think there’s a bunch of absolute horse garbage that’s on social media right now,” he said of rumors about Sellers’ departure for another school before joking about rumors that Sellers might stay at USC.
“Hopefully that’s not horse garbage,” he said.
Ultimately, Beamer said he’s had conversations with players about their future plans, but it isn’t anyone’s main focus as of now.
“Obviously as a head coach, if I wasn’t having conversations with players throughout the season in regards to their futures ... you got guys that have NFL decisions to make, and a lot of that,” he said. “I don’t want to speak for everyone. There’ll be a time for all of that.”
Through 10 games this season, Sellers has thrown for nine touchdowns, six interceptions and 1,782 yards. He’s been sacked 37 times, the most for any Division I FBS quarterback this season.
There are two more games to be played this season before Sellers’ future becomes the No. 1 topic in Gamecock football. With the new transfer portal period running from Jan. 2-16, and the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft on Jan. 15, Sellers will have to announce a decision in the next two months.
