It has been a big week for J’Zavien Currence.

The South Pointe football two-way standout signed with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday. On Friday, Currence took home one of the state’s top honors as he won the SC Gatorade Player of the Year award, which is for athletic and off-the field achievements.

Currence is the second South Pointe player to win the award, joining Derrion Kendrick (2017).

So far this season, Currence has passed for 2,764 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,497 yards and 18 scores. On defense, he has 81 tackles and four interceptions.

Currence also carries a 4.10 GPA in the classroom.

The team and individual awards might not be done for Currence. He helped the Stallions win the Class 4A state championships on Saturday.

Next week, he is a finalist for the SC Mr. Football award to be announced on Dec. 13.
