Former USC coach Will Muschamp takes defensive coordinator job at new SEC school
Will Muschamp is returning to the coaching sidelines at another Southeastern Conference school.
Muschamp, the former coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, was named the new defensive coordinator at Texas on Thursday. He replaces Pete Kwiatkowski, who was fired after five seasons.
“This is an exciting day for the Muschamp family,” Muschamp said in a statement released by the school. “We loved our time in Austin and truly enjoyed everything about working with Texas Football. We’re thrilled to be coming back to a program with one of the richest and proudest histories and traditions in college football. With what (Coach Steve Sarkisian) has done in rebuilding this program — knowing there are even better days ahead — I was fired up for the opportunity. I have tremendous respect and admiration for Sark, how he leads his program, develops his team and players, builds culture and goes about his business. I’m excited to be a part of it and can’t wait to get started, Hook ‘em!”
This will be Muschamp’s second stint at Texas. He was the defensive coordinator under Mack Brown from 2008-10 and the Longhorns made it to the national championship game in 2009.
Muschamp was named coach in waiting at Texas but left to become head coach at Florida in 2011. He stayed there until 2014.
Muschamp was head coach at South Carolina from 2016 until his firing in 2020. The Gamecocks hired Shane Beamer to replace him. Texas is not on the Gamecocks’ schedule next season.
After USC, Muschamp spent 2021-2024 at Georgia, with roles as a defensive analyst and co-defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs. This year, he was not formally affiliated with UGA, according to a copy of Georgia’s 2025 media guide.
