South Carolina’s spring football season is set to begin March 4. While head coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks are getting ready for the 2026 season, so is Williams-Brice Stadium.

USC’s home stadium is undergoing the first phase of a renovation project slated to run through Aug. 14.

The ongoing construction brought the status of USC’s annual spring football game, which is usually played in front of fans at Williams-Brice Stadium, into question. Beamer cleared the air and all but closed the door on any sort of spring game in the Gamecocks’ stadium.

“I would not anticipate the spring game taking place in Williams-Brice Stadium because of the construction,” Beamer said while speaking with reporters Wednesday.

Beamer added that he wants to do right by fans, implying that another public spring football event could take place somewhere other than Williams-Brice.

“We’ve got to do what’s best for construction. We’ve got to do what’s best for our fans. We’ve got to do what’s best for our team in regards to spring practice. But we should have some more information on that as we go forward,” Beamer said.

“But, you know, don’t anticipate an actual game, so to speak, taking place in the stadium.”

The construction projects are just the first phase of what’s planned to be a three-year, $350 million renovation of USC’s home stadium, a venue that was originally built in 1934. This phase of the renovation focuses on improving concourses and restrooms, as well as adding more concession stands. The structure for new premium spaces, a student-only club space and an additional video board will be built in this phase but not completed in time for 2026.

By the time the full project is finished in 2028, USC is expected to have added the student club area, multiple new premium seating options and two additional video boards to Williams-Brice Stadium while reducing capacity by approximately 4,100 seats.

“We’re right on track,” Contact Construction CEO Greg Hughes, whose company the lead builder on the project, told The State in January.
