Former Gamecock quarterback joining Shane Beamer’s coaching staff
After six seasons on the South Carolina football roster, Luke Doty is staying with the program.
Doty will be joining Shane Beamer’s staff as an assistant coach. The Myrtle Beach native will be working with the defensive backs coach Torian Gray. The BigSpur was the first to report the news on Doty.
Doty updated the change on his X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram page with the title Gamecock defensive assistant/defensive backs on his profile.
Doty, 24, was a popular member of the Gamecocks program and had a variety of roles in his six seasons. He was a starting quarterback, receiver and also played on special teams and earned two degrees.
Because of his long tenure with the program, The Athletic named Doty to its annual All-Geezer College Football Team. The publication started naming the team in 2021, the first season that “super seniors” (players who have played more than four years) started taking advantage of their free year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Doty talked about wanting to get into coaching during media interviews in August and then again before his final game against Clemson. He was kind of like a coach on the field the past two seasons and Gray even nicknamed him “Coach Doty”.
“When I’m not out on the field, I can still be there and engaged with my teammates, and it also helps me to stay engaged within the game plan,” Doty said. “Talking ball with the guys is something that I think is good for developing relationships, too.”
Beamer said back in November he would be open to the opportunity of having Doty on his staff if he wanted to pursue coaching.
“He and I haven’t had that conversation, but yeah, if he was interested in getting into coaching, and he wanted to continue to try and stay around here, sign me up,” Beamer said.
Doty was once a four-star recruit at Myrtle Beach High School and led the Seahawks to the 2018 Class 4A state championship and was the No. 2 ranked player coming out of South Carolina. He was expected to start at QB as a sophomore in 2021, Beamer’s first season with the team, before he was sidelined with a foot injury.
Doty went on to play in 48 games over his career and threw for 1,696 yards, rushed for 193, caught 16 passes for 140 with 12 total touchdowns.
