South Carolina extends Mike Furrey’s contract. Here are the details
South Carolina has given added job security to one of its assistant coaches.
On Thursday, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approved a one-year contract extension for wide receivers coach Mike Furrey. While his annual salary of $650,000 wasn’t changed, his contract will now run through the 2027 season.
Like every other South Carolina assistant coach, Furrey received a two-year extension following the 2024 season, which bumped his annual compensation from $425,000 to $650,000. That contract was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2026.
As it stands, among the Gamecocks’ 10 on-field assistant coaches, only defensive line coach Travian Robertson’s contract will expire following the 2026 season.
Following a bizarre timeline in which South Carolina had three wide receivers coaches in less than three months, Furrey, 48, joined Beamer’s staff in late February of 2024 after spending four seasons (2018-21) as the Chicago Bears’ WRs coach and two seasons as the head coach for Division II Limestone College.
A former NFL wide receiver and defensive backs who willed his way to success against all conventual wisdom, Furrey is perhaps the most-energetic, fun-loving coach at South Carolina. That personality has translated well on the recruiting trail, where the Gamecocks have landed many of the Palmetto State’s top wide outs since Furrey’s arrival.
Though South Carolina has not had a true breakout wide receiver under Furrey (no WR has had a season with over 650 yards), there were signs of development for a number of USC receivers last season, including Nyck Harbor and freshman Jayden Sellers.
“He’s gonna push you, push you real hard,” Sellers said of Furrey on Wednesday. “He tells you a lot about IQ, reading coverages. ... He’s a great coach. I love coach Furrey.”
