South Carolina stayed relatively injury-free during most of preseason camp.
It’s caught up.
“Jerell Adams hasn’t practiced in three days,” coach Steve Spurrier said of the Gamecocks’ listed starting tight end. “I doubt if Jerell will start now. We’ll see how he feels Thursday night.”
Adams, a senior, was being counted on to have a big year. If he can’t play, his listed backups are true freshman walk-on Hayden Hurst, true freshman Kyle Markway and redshirt freshman K.C. Crosby. Spurrier has also lauded redshirt freshman walk-on Jacob August.
“We’ve got three tight ends,” Spurrier said. “And they’ll play their (butt) off. They’re good ballplayers. We are sort of young at tight end, but they are good players and they will scrap.”
In addition to Adams, linebacker Jonathan Walton sat out of practice on Monday with a back problem and backup center Cody Waldrop had his right knee wrapped. Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott said that Waldrop should be OK and Walton’s status wasn’t clarified, but USC is experiencing its turn in the injury cycle.
The Gamecocks had a pretty clean bill of health since Aug. 3. From Aug. 27-Sept. 1, two starters were banged up, a top backup was as well and two wide receivers were out for the season.
Brandon Wilds is listed as the starting running back, but the line throughout preseason camp has been that Wilds and David Williams are backs 1A and 1B. Don’t discount Williams, Spurrier said.
“David had a lot of good runs last year,” Spurrier said. “In fact, he was actually in the game down in The Swamp in overtime and had several key carries making first downs and so forth in our overtime win down there.”
Williams had three carries for 8 yards in the game, logging most after Wilds was nearly taken out by Vernon Hargreaves (after Shaq Roland whiffed on a block). He rushed 45 times for 256 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
“Coach … ”
