We’re joined once again by David Purdum of ESPN Chalk to help us break down South Carolina’s game against Texas A&M and a couple of the big games upcoming in the SEC.
This line has stayed pretty steady since it opened Sunday right?
It has. I saw a 15.5 be the first number to come out in the Las Vegas books. It’s about 16.5 right now, and I haven’t seen a lot of line movement anywhere. That may have something to do with the question marks we have with the Texas A&M quarterback situation.
Do you expect Friday’s announcement of the Aggies’ starter to make any difference in the line?
No, I can’t see that one or the other quarterback is going to make a significant difference. They are all so unknown really, and you’re still looking at a 15- or 16-point spread. It seems like a pretty high number as it is. If it went over 17, that would be a very significant number.
Given that the number is so high despite Texas A&M’s recent struggles, it doesn’t look like Las Vegas is expecting the Gamecocks to mount much of a rally to close out the season.
No, I don’t get that perception at all. South Carolina is 0-3 against the spread and straight up as an underdog this year. Any time they have faced a team with what is perceived as superior talent, they haven’t put up much of a fight. Las Vegas is like, ‘We have seen this road before. We are going to keep this number pretty high.’
What’s the big game in the SEC this weekend?
Florida-Georgia is always a big fun game. Georgia was actually the favorite in this game all year long, including as recently as last week. Then Florida opened the week as a 2.5-point favorite. Even Georgia fans were surprised they were favored last week, and then when it reopened Florida had been made the favorite.
The big, big game is in two weeks though, right?
Yep, Alabama-LSU. Alabama has been the favorite all season and it has been as high as 10 in the preseason when we really didn’t have nearly as much expectations of good LSU might be, but that line is all the way down to 6.5 now. It’s the game of the season arguably.
Any advice for my ‘lock of the week’ this week?
Oh, yeah. Mississippi minus-7 at Auburn. I just think Mississippi is by far the superior team.
